Lake Eyre Trip, Day 1: To Adelaide we go

We woke to the promised, but rare this autumn, rainy day. And, unusually for us, we were able to be leisurely about our departure preparations, as our first flight wasn’t until 12:50pm. It’s Mothers Day of course. By the way, where do YOU put the apostrophe? One mother’s day, multiple mothers’, or can we omit the apostrophe because mothers don’t own the day, it being a day for them. I usually opt for this last one, but you can argue with me if you like.

Anyhow, still on the subject of both mothers and rain, we had a very pleasant taxi driver in Canberra. Our small talk started, not surprisingly, with the rain and how we need it. A bit of a shame for Mothers Day, however, we suggested? But no, our taxi driver’s perspective was different. Once again mothers had come through, bringing what was needed! I liked this taxi driver!

We don’t have much more to say. Our flights went smoothly, at least timing-wise. It was a little bumpy between Melbourne and Adelaide, but I was engrossed in watching the first half of last year’s movie, Martian (I hope to catch the rest on our return flight), and Len in Qantas mag’s sudoku. Time passed happily with the bumps barely registering.

We arrived in Adelaide around 4pm. It’s a lovely city, and one l love to visit, though I did discover the other day that so-called city of churches has another nickname, the city of corpses. This is not because it has more murders than other Aussie cities, but because it has had a goodly number of distressing ones, starting with the unsolved disappearance of the Beaumont children in 1966, and including the later Snowtown murders. Perhaps it’s good we’re heading out tomorrow – though we’ll be back!!

For dinner, it being the end of a long day, we decided to eat in. “In” turned out to be Argentinian, La Boca. Very meaty, but generally tasty – loved the corn – and a cheery, albeit rather gendered, venue. (Happy Hour, for example, is called Husband Day Care Centre!)

Tomorrow, around 9.30am, our coach will pick us up. We look forward to meeting a bunch of congenial people with whom to share the next few days. Wish us luck.

PS It looks like internet connection will be tricky where we are going, so there may be a few days between drinks, as they say. Patience, though, is a virtue OR Good things come to those who wait. Take your pick!

  1. Mothers Day? Lately I have been treating Mothers as an adjective but I feel the apostrophe, if used, should be after the ‘s’ – after all it is supposed to be honouring all mothers.

Glad the trip has started so well and hope you get to see the end of your film, Sue. Did Len get the sudoku out? Love the ‘Husband Day Care Centre’ even if it is sexist – especially if they really do care and not let the husbands overdo the elbow bending.

Rained all day today – mostly just drizzle.

    Have fun.

  2. Yes, I’ve gone the adjective approach too Mum, but I did read that the person who originated it wanted the ‘s approach!

Hope you have nice weather tomorrow. X

  3. Hi Sue and Len, it sounds as though you had a good and comfortable start to your trip yesterday! It’s still drizzling here and our tiny Japanese maple has rows of jewell-like rain drops along its bare branches. Hope your tour group is a happy one and that the weather clears for you, as your coach ‘sails’ along the highway on your outward bound journey!

    • Thanks Mary, I hope you photographed your Japanese maple! I thought of you and me today because our tour coach took us down to Glenelg to pick up some of our group (there were three pickup point – a town hotel, a Glenelg one and the airport). We passed the Atlantic Motor Inn!

      • Hi Sue,
Yes I took a photo of the tree 🙂 Nice that you went though Glenelg again on this trip. It was very good work that we did on that data base involving that trip you mentioned, and I also have good and pleasant memories of our collaborative effort on that work and our related travels. Can’t believe that it is now a few years ago! Hope all is going well for your and Len’s current trip!

        • Haha Mary, I can’t believe how long ago those trips were too. I went looking for our photos and didn’t go far enough back at first!

  4. We had a touch of much needed rain in SoCal yesterday. Hey ! That stuff is wet and cold. What’s up with that? Today the sun as Queen again but the coastal breeze was refreshing and a little on the chill side still. Great for the morning stint with the pups at the Dog Park and still good for a short return in the afternoon. Todd showed up with his pup and Carter made a tasty light dinner. Mother’s day was just FINE.

Sue and Len always great to hear from you two and you know I love it when you travel and take us with! Also love when there is a note from your Mum!!

My card from Todd said Happy Mother’s Day (with an exclamation and a heart instead of a dot) I also got a stuffed puppy with a LOVE heart between it’s paws. =) Carter’s card to me (I a not his mother) had a cat dressed as a waitress with a nametag that said JOY. The cat was a very irritated looking sort of Blonde Persian. In front of her was plate with some lft over food, a coffee cup. and a quarter and a few pennies soaked in a pool of spilled java. A blurry sign on the wall above her head says “I Love My Job”. Inside the card just reads SERIOUSLY?! and Carter wrote me a little poem.

“BearCat with fire in her eyes, and indignation in her demeanor, there is no joy in Coffeeville!”

Made me laugh. AND he told me he thought it looked just like me when I had a bad day. =) I could certainly identify with that “Bear Cat” but not today – Today was FINE.

Love the artwork at La Boca and the Grilled Chicken and the corn did look delicious.

Go well, have fun, enjoy each other, hope your travel mates are lovely interesting people.

    Trudy for Trudy & Carter

    • Oh, but you don’t have bad days do you, Trudy? You are always cheery and bright! Lovely to see that you saw our post and are following our next adventures. I’ll do my best to find a critter or two. There should be birds at least! But now, dinner calls and on tour you have to follow their timing if you want to eat!
