Thredbo 2016, Days One to Three

Ok, so here we are in Thredbo again, for our annual get-away. We’ve shifted it up a notch this year by booking ourselves in for 5 nights, not the 4 we’ve done in recent years. Gives us a little more time to do our walks AND enjoy some laidback time.

Laid-back time started by our not heading out for a walk the afternoon we arrived, as we usually do. We had a pleasant drive here, stopping, as we traditionally do, for lunch at the peaceful Wild Brumby Distillery, between Jindabyne and Thredbo. And then, also traditionally, we dined on tapas at Bernti’s on their lovely patio. We love it when we can start our time here sitting outside in the evening, feeling part of a community.

We have lucked out, it seems, with the weather, with forecasts of several days of fine 20-24°C days. Perfect for walking. Last week Thredbo had a lot of rain, and this coming weekend, two days after we leave, the forecast is for two days of about 8-9°C. Brrr. We hope all those attending the annual Blues Festival next week bring their woollies but I guess we can be sure that Thredbo knows how to warm a place up!

Day 2

Our first walk of the trip was to combine two walks. We started with the nearly 4km return walk from the top of the Crackenback chairlift to the Mt Kosciuszko Lookout (not to Mt Kosciuszko itself), and followed this with a cuppa at Eagle’s Nest bistro. We then did the circa 6km Merritt’s Traverse walk down the hill. It’s a fairly demanding walk, partly because 2kms or so are on a rather scary gravel access road. You have to watch that you don’t slip, but our walking poles and the grass verge helped. Nearly 10kms walk was a good start for us.

That night we dined at our favourite place (mostly) in Thredbo, the Terrace in the Denman Hotel. Len took a risk on a Belgian Passionfruit Beer. Hmmm, is all I can say. We had a pleasant meal, with lovely service by a Canadian-born-you-say-tomAHto-I-say-tomAYto server, but it wasn’t quite up to the standard of previous visits. Thredbo in summer can be a bit hit-and-miss in terms of food, but it is always relaxing.

Day 3

Today we did another cobbled together walk, a little shorter than yesterday’s, but similarly strenuous because this one included a bit of a climb, getting us ready for our Day 4 plan. This walk ended up being about 6kms and involved starting on the Riverside Walk, then joining the Meadows Nature Track, before ending with the bottom section of Merritt’s Nature Track. It’s a lovely walk, and one you can put together close to the village, never having to get into your car (as with yesterday’s walk).

For those interested in the minutiae of this walk, here’s the Map-My-Walk report:

By getting out in the morning and doing our walks early, as we did on Days 2 and 3, we gave ourselves more laid-back time in the afternoon for reading and relaxing. Perfetto.

In the evening we tried Santé’s Brazilian Churrasco restaurant. Lots of meat, but some tasty sides as well.

  1. Love the video! Sue you look adorable. The little busy stream is beautiful and sounds wonderful.

Be careful on those walks. Enjoy the reads. Have a great time and let all the treasured memories of your past visits enrich the current experience.

    • Adorable! Haha Trudy. Not sure when I’ve last heard that – but at least you didn’t use the Gen Y “adorbs”! You are so right about past memories enriching the present experience. They do!
