Thredbo 2020, Day 0: Getting started

On Sunday we will be heading off on our fire-postponed annual Thredbo holiday. We are, of course, looking forward to it, though are prepared for a “lesser” experience, given the notification we received below:

We are pleased to advise that the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have confirmed that Thredbo Resort is able to open to the public from today, Tuesday 14 January 2020. Usual summer resort operations will resume including all in-resort facilities including Kosciuszko Express Chair, the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park, Thredbo Leisure Centre, resort walking trails, golf, tennis, bobsled and the Thredbo retail and food and beverage venues.

Please note: Thredbo Valley Trail (TVT) and hikes outside Thredbo’s resort boundaries including the Mount Kosciuszko Summit Hike, Mount Townsend Hike, Alpine Lakes Hike, Dead Horse Gap Hike, The Ruins Hike and The Ramshead Hike will remain closed until further notice.  All staff, residents and guests must stay within the Thredbo Resort area.

In other words, most of the walks we like to do will be off-limits, unless of course things change while we are there. We are hopeful that they might, that at least the Thredbo Valley Trail will be open, as it runs between Thredbo and Crackenback which were, we believe, away from the main fire areas in the Park. We’ll see. Meanwhile, there are several walks in the “resort area” and while we know them well, we can always do them again, and cobble different arrangements of them. And, of course, there’s always soaking up the peace, enjoying some relaxed dining, and reading.

hello

It would be cheeky of us to say that we have chosen to do this trip, despite the less than ideal circumstances, in order to support this fire-affected region, as Aussies are being exhorted to do. We love our Thredbo trip so we are just happy that we are able to go. However, last week on a quick trip to the Southern Highlands (pictured), we saw first-hand the impact of the fires on tourism, which has given us an extra incentive to support the people and businesses of Kosci!

A little change to Wherry Online

Our main reason for writing this pre-trip post, however, is to let you know about an administrative change on our blog, which is that we have moved our “Oz Travel” blog from an overseas to an Australian server.  What this means for you is that you will need to use this new URL https://oztravel.wherryonline.id.au to read it.  We hope this move results in better performance for our Australian readers.

If you always open Oz Travel, or any of our other travel blogs, by following links on the existing Wherry Online landing page at https://wherryonline.com, or the new duplicated landing page at https://wherryonline.id.au, then you don’t need to change anything. You can continue in this way until further notice.

However, if you have saved links or bookmarks for the Oz Travel blog, then you will need to update those items to reflect new URL. If you end up following old links, you will find yourself reading a page which explains the situation and gives you a new link to click.

As for receiving notifications of our posts, if you have received this one, then your subscription to the blog is still working and has automatically transferred over to the new server.

We hope the inconvenience isn’t too great and that you will enjoy reading the blog of our Australian travel adventures in the future.
